Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence, showcases a new form of bead art, the ndwango, developed by a community of women living and working together in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The six artists featured in the exhibition call their paintings in beads ndwangos, which translates as “cloth” or “rag.” The black fabric on which the Ubuhle women work is reminiscent of the Xhosa headscarves and skirts which many of them grew up wearing (through 8/27), Bowers Museum, Santa Ana, bowers.org

This summer the Bowers Museum and the historic California Art Club are partnering for a second time to exhibit the 112th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition. Alice Neel: Feels Like Home examines the role of kinship, chosen family, and the importance of community within the work of Alice Neel (b. 1900, Gladwyne, PA; d. 1984, New York, NY), one of the foremost American figurative painters of the twentieth century. A curated selection of forty paintings, many pulled from the estate’s collection, focuses on Neel’s honest, intimate paintings of her home, children, animals, and expanded family. Anderson is the first exhibition to look at Meacham Strobridge’s Little Corner of Local Art gallery and to acknowledge her important contribution to the development of Los Angeles culture. Her gallery was a popular gathering place for the writers, artists, and craftspeople of the Arroyo Seco, and gave rising talents some of their earliest exposure.
